July 11 - July 15

7-15-78 ~1126 (2586) Blind River, Ont. The run out of the Apostle Island was horrid. The roads were rugged and narrow with tons of traffic. The road though is in the process of being repaved (possibly four lanes). US 2 is a thunk-thunk. Mailed a package from Ashland.

Michigan roads are no better. Spent the night of the 11th in Wakefield. The town of Wakefield is interesting, well wooded. We stopped in Bessemer Court House and had a big one pulled up to the side of the boat but something went wrong and she got away. We had her talking

about hot baths, dinners & soft beds, damn!

On the 12th we met up w/ two others [bicyclists] and were leap frogging all day. Ate lunch at Kenton, neat dog, and spent the night at Three Lakes. The roads were shitty (thunk-thunk). It's the last we saw of the couple bound for Kalamazoo. On the 13th we went through Marquette, saw the college of NMU [North Michigan University], court house & church. I did [not] care too much for M, but it was better than Minot. The roads continued to be shitty.

Ate lunch not far from the junc. south of Marq. and found out what a "pastie" was they looked good. Went through Munising had a G-fruit & bought dinner cont. to about 6 miles west of Seney at a rest area not bad if it were not for the VLBDM.

The next day was the "Soo". Ate lunch at Strong's. The morning was a cold sonna' bitch. Made it to the US Sault about 2:30. We looked at the locks, bought bicycle crap and found out it [was] best to exchange money in Canada. Upon arriving at "Soo" Canada, we changed money for 11 3/4%

and proceeded to find the Hostel. The hostel has an adjoining motel and when we called the guy gave us the motel prices not the hostel, $17, Wow! We the[n] bought canisters for the stove and the guy there told us how to get to the "Y". At the Y we got showers, free, and [information about] a place just up the street recommended for Din. Fano's. Oh God. J had Gnotchi & Lasagna; I had Ravioli & Rigatoni, each had two beers, spilt a pizza and had milk shakes for dessert. OOOhhh! Way too much for any human. We got to the hostel about 9:30–

all sorts of neat people there with loads of info, tales and good talk. Hot and muggy though. Mileage about 1063.
