Dropped down to Buena Vista for food, ate at Pizza Hut. Camped at rest area
about 4 miles from Glasgow. Yesterday ate breakfast at Glasgow, no
hot cakes. Had Ham, eggs, donuts & cereal. Left about 7:30 and head[ed]
9 miles to my 13 mile 3286 foot climb. Ate lunch at Peaks of Otter. Was [not]
feel[ing] up to snuff so I only went as far as Roanoke Mtn. Spent the night
there, called home & talked with a local girl who was bicycling through.
I figured about 15 days to Kansas. ate break. at 220 Truck Stop (Grungy!) and
now eating lunch at Rocky Knob. mile 169.

8-20-78 Mile 199 - 4965. Stopped last night at a farm mile 194. There were two
couples there; older Harris, younger Hawks. I rolled up to asking if there were
a place in the area to stay and eventually was invited in to pitch my tent on the
lawn. They gave me peaches, tomatoes & Pepsi. Sat & talked for a long time.
I was lucky and found a 7:00am café at Fancy Gap. Met two truckers damn
nice guys even went out of their way to say good-bye when the[y] left. Which is
not protocol and made a few

brows raise when they did so. The brows were tourist
brows which will probably run me off the road later today. I will miss the NPS
[National Park Service] pavement, but I won't miss the tourists & their
restaurants. A piece of pie & cup of coffee and I'm off.
PS Strong wind out of the west.

It was about Buena Vista where I started realizing the my physical and mental
capabilities were tied to some sort of cycle. At the time "biorhythms" were the
in thing. What I was seeing was something very close to that and I seemed to be
getting a low in both my mental and physical in this span. I really was having
trouble and could not figure out why until I started thinking back. So, if
you go touring, make sure to listen to your body and give it a break when it
needs it.
By the way, at the Pizza Hunt I had two glasses of beer, a large combination
pizza and a tall vanilla milkshake. I actually had to argue with the waitress about
ordering it, since she thought I would throw away the food. Even I do not know
where I put it all.
