Like any city, The Dalles is a bit painful, especially during tourist season. Work though it, the rewards are there. Find your way to Sixth Street and follow the signs to the Wasco Museum, Columbia River Historical District or Rowena. All will get you on the right road.

The road up to Rowena is windy and long, but is not a bad grade. As with the entire Oregon side, I like the East to West travel. Since there are notably less cars in that direction. That is pretty important since these roads have no shoulder. I have found that most cars are okay, RV's and locals in a hurry are the danger.

After Rowena it is flat and downhill, a very enjoyable ride. To find the Bike Trail out of Mosier watch the signs carefully. You need to go under Highway 30 in an odd spot, otherwise you will end up on the freeway. You do not want to do that when the Mosier-Hood River Trail is waiting for you.
